Protect your income — and your peace of mind — in case an illness, injury or pregnancy keeps you from working.
Disability insurance helps replace part of your income, so you can continue to pay your bills and daily living expenses, if you are unable to work due to illness, injury or pregnancy. DXC provides disability insurance through The Hartford.
You have options for Short-Term Disability (STD) coverage and Long-Term Disability (LTD) coverage. Both are voluntary benefits, and your cost for coverage depends on the elections you make. You can see the specific costs when you make your elections in the online enrollment system. You pay for the coverage with post-tax dollars, so any benefits you receive will be tax-free.
You can elect STD and LTD insurance for yourself when you are newly eligible, during Benefits Annual Enrollment or within 30 days of a qualifying life event. As a new hire, you are defaulted into the second STD option (30-day waiting period) so that you have income protection through this critical coverage. You can change to the first STD option or waive coverage when you make your new hire benefit elections. If you want LTD coverage, you must enroll in that option during your enrollment window.
Important: You cannot enroll at any other time, even if you are facing a disability event. Also, if you don’t enroll in STD and/or LTD when you are first eligible and you try to enroll at a later time (during Benefits Annual Enrollment or within 30 days of a qualifying life event), you will be considered a “late entrant” and need to successfully meet evidence of insurability (EOI) requirements to prove that you are in good physical health.
STD insurance
You can choose STD insurance, which would replace 60% of your base salary up to a maximum weekly benefit of $3,462. Benefits start after a seven-day or 30-day waiting period, whichever you elect, and continue for up to 26 weeks from your initial date of disability as long as you remain disabled.
LTD insurance
If you want disability income protection to pick up where your STD coverage ends, you can purchase LTD insurance. This coverage pays a monthly benefit equal to 60% of your base salary, up to a maximum monthly benefit of $15,000. Benefits start after a 180-day waiting period and continue until your disability ends or you reach the maximum benefit duration age (based on your policy).
What to consider when choosing income disability protection
- Even if you can’t work, you still need to pay the bills. Without a steady income, you could get behind on your rent or mortgage, car payment, tuition, utilities and other bills. The income protection provided by disability insurance helps you pay for these ongoing expenses while you’re unable to work.
- If you were unable to work, would other sources of income be available to you, such as sick pay, an individual STD plan or Social Security? If so, consider whether you would have enough money to pay your ongoing expenses for a period of time.
- Don’t wait to enroll in this coverage until you need it. If you don’t enroll when you are first eligible (typically as a new hire) and decide to enroll later, you’ll need to provide evidence of insurability (EOI). Your EOI must be reviewed and approved by the insurance carrier and is subject to denial.
